Unplag Plagiarism Detection

Unplag is a web-based plagiarism and content checker that detects same or similar content in documents and webpages. Unplag uses an algorithm to check for plagiarized content by searching for text that is identical to the document being checked.

Unplag is currently available in all Canvas courses. We are piloting and evaluating the tool for the spring 2017 semester and welcome any feedback. Please email classes@emory.edu with any thoughts or questions.

As a third-party service, Unplag integrates with Canvas Assignments to allow instructors to detect plagiarism in assignments submitted in Canvas. Students can also check their own papers to make sure all their sources are properly acknowledged. Like other options in Canvas Assignments, instructors can enable the Unplag service when creating or editing an Assignment under the “Submission Type” section:

Unplag Originality Scores

After a submission has been processed, a report is generated detailing the percentage of text in the submitted paper that matches existing sources. The report also shows the suspected sources of each section of the submitted paper that returns a match. You can omit matching sources from the report and process it again. This is useful if the paper is a continuation of a previously submitted work by the same student.

  1. In the Course Navigation, click the Assignments link.
  2. If you chose to launch the tool in a new tab, you will see the button to launch the assignment.
  3. The submission table will display new records for student submissions. Click the students name to expand the submission details.
  4. Access the link to the submission in the "Student" column to open the file.
  5. View the Report Results
