Emory Online: Overview

Emory faculty, staff, and students with a valid EmoryCard may pick up a free copy of the EOL CD at the Computing Center at Cox Hall or at the Emory Bookstore.

The Emory Online (EOL) CD is intended for Emory student workstations, as well as faculty and staff home workstations. If you are Emory faculty or staff and intend to install this product on your office workstation, please consult with your local computing support staff before proceeding.

EOL was created and designed by staff in University Technology Services (UTS) and is distributed to customers free of charge. It was produced with the latest available and tested versions of supported network software. At regular intervals throughout the year, software is updated and available at software.emory.edu/express

1. Security Scan

Nothing can protect against unsafe computing, but Emory Online provides an excellent foundation for securing your computer by compiling a fundamental set of security metrics into its Security Scan. These tools scan Windows workstations for vulnerabilities, and then proceed to:

  • enable the Windows firewall

  • check Microsoft's site everyday for new Windows patches and fixes

  • run various removal tools to actively remove existing infections

  • install Emory's site-licensed Symantec Anti-Virus Corporate Edition and set it to check daily for virus definition updates and scan weekly for viruses

  • install Spybot: Search & Destroy and set it to check for spyware definition updates every day

  • install the latest available Service Pack for your operating system

  • install any critical updates that are necessary for your operating system

  • prompt you to create strong passwords for all user accounts on your computer.

Verifying the security of your computer is a critical step to ensuring the protection of your data and the stability of your network connection.  If you feel comfortable enough with your computer to enact all of the changes that are required in order to be on the Emory network, then you do not have to run these tools from the CD.

If your Windows workstation is already compromised and vulnerable to virus threats or external hacks, these tasks described above could take more than two hours to complete.

2. Emory Unplugged

Emory Unplugged is Emory's wireless networking service that features WPA encryption and seamless node migration.  Emory Online provides configuration tools that get your Windows or Macintosh computer configured for Emory Unplugged in mere minutes.

3. Get Connected!

Are you connecting to the campus network from your Emory residence?  Before connecting to the campus residential network (ResNet), you must participate in Network Registration, a two-phase process which consists of:

  1. scanning your computer with the Client Assessment Tool (CAT) to ensure that it meets several security baselines

  2. registering your computer's network connection by logging in with your Emory Network ID and password

Emory Online provides tools which make registering online quick and painless.
