Personal Web Pages: Getting Started

  1. Your personal web page is stored in your personal space on the Emory Webdrive. If you have never used the Webdrive or accessed your personal space, start with the Webdrive step-by-step getting started instructions.

  2. In your personal space, create a folder named "www". You can do this using any normal method for accessing your personal space. The instructions here are for accessing your personal space with a web browser.

    1. Enter the URL of your personal space into your web browser. Your personal space URL looks like:
      http://webdrive.service.emory.edu/users/networkID/
where networkID is your Network ID.

      Shortcuts

These shortcuts allow quick access into the Emory Webdrive. For access and administrative controls, finish the Webdrive URL and click OK.

    2. Click the "folders" link at the top of the page.
    3. In the "Create Folder" box, type "www".
    4. Click "create".

  3. Create your HTML pages in your favorite web or HTML authoring software. UTS recommends Adobe's Dreamweaver and supports its use in both Emory's Center for Interactive Teaching and The Computing Center at Cox Hall.

HTML pages should have an extension of ".html". Your main page should have the name "index.html". The personal web page server is case sensitive. Both the ".html" extension and the "index.html" name must be in lowercase.

When naming HTML pages, stick with letters, numbers, dots ".", hyphens "-", and underscores "_". Spaces and other unusual characters will make it difficult to access the pages after they are uploaded.

  4. Upload your new pages to the "www" folder you just created. You can do this using any normal method for accessing your personal space. The instructions here are for accessing your personal space with a web browser.

    1. Enter the URL of the "www" folder into your web browser. The URL looks like:
      http://webdrive.service.emory.edu/users/networkID/www/
This is the URL to upload your pages.
    2. Click the "folders" link at the top of the page.
    3. Next to the "Upload" box, click the "Browse" button.
    4. Find and select the first page to upload.
    5. Click "Upload".
    6. Repeat these steps to upload any additional pages.

  5. Look at your new web page in your web browser. The URL to view your pages looks like:
    http://userwww.service.emory.edu/~networkID/

Keep in mind the URL to upload your pages is different from the URL to view your pages. If you attempt to view your pages using the upload URL, things will not always work as you would expect. For example, the file list will always be displayed instead of the "index.html" file and pages more complicated than simple HTML may not display properly.

Always publish the URL to view your pages:

    http://userwww.service.emory.edu/~networkID/

Never publish the URL to upload your pages.

  6. If you would like to have new personal web page listed on the index of Individual Home Pages, please use our request form. Include in your request your full name and the URL to view your site:
    http://userwww.service.emory.edu/~networkID/
