Digital Certificates: Overview

Access: Emory server system administrators and server managers.
Contact: For questions about digital certificates, email the IT Security Team

Emory uses VeriSign digital certificate service to issue and manage 128-bit server digital certificates. This enables higher-level security for internet and intranet applications. UTS Security does not recommend the use of certificates offering less than 128-bit encryption. It is now an industry standard to move away from 40-bit encryption because 128-bit encrypted messages are significantly more difficult to break. By having a central repository of certificates managed by University Technology Services (UTS), Emory realizes one-time enrollment, avoids multiple purchase orders and certificate expiration dates, obtains better pricing, and allows distributed server managers to obtain digital certificates through a common interface.
