Remote access options are available to users of Emory's data network through authentication with an Emory Network ID and password. See Getting Started for complete instructions. Dial-Up AccessUniversity Technology Services (UTS) maintains a modem pool for dial-up connections to the University network, including Internet access. Changes to the modem pool were last made in June 2004. Virtual Private Network (VPN)UTS maintains a VPN server which allows users to connect to network services through a private ISP (Internet Service Provider). VPN enables Internet traffic to travel securely over a public network by encrypting all the traffic from one network to another through secure "tunnels." In doing so, this virtual connection looks like an Emory node over the public Internet, allowing users high-speed access to network services through privately provided cable modem or DSL services. A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is most often used, as it is at Emory, to provide remote offices or individual users with secure access to their organization's network. At Emory, there are two supported uses for VPN services:
