Database Management

Database Management provides OIT and departmental customers/applications with the most robust, scalable, and highly available database service to meet their data and business needs. The majority of Emory University’s OIT applications run on relational database management systems (RDBMS) and managed by the OIT DBA team. As of today, OIT Database Management offers its application solution in Oracle, MS SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL (AWS RDS), and Mongo Atlas DB (Cloud).

Like most other trends in the industry, OIT Database Management engaged with customers to migrate either the whole on-prem infrastructure to the AWS Cloud or only the database to AWS RDS/EC2. In conjunction with an organizational initiative of cloud migration, Database Management administers, maintains, develops, and implements policies and procedures for ensuring the security and integrity of Emory’s databases.

Database Service

  • OIT Database Management service is classified as a Platinum-level service.
  • OIT DBA will provide 24/7 on-call support for any unplanned downtime on production databases. Development and test databases will be supported during regular business hours of 8 AM - 5 PM.
  • Incident Management – Any unplanned Database outages will be managed using the OIT standard Service Level Agreement (SLA) using the incident tickets in Service-Now.
  • Change Management - Change tickets for Database administration tasks, such as upgrades or patching, will be handled by the DBA team. For application activities, such as custom backup before an application upgrade, application teams will open change tickets and notify the DBA team in advance via Service Requests.
  • Audit and compliance requirements will be supported if they are documented and communicated to the OIT DBA team in advance. We support HIPAA compliance with encryption, as well as custom user profiles.
