How to resolve authentication flow issue on iOS devices with MS Authenticator

Q. I got the “Oops, something went wrong. We were unable to complete your authentication flow” messages on my Apple iPhone or iPad and can’t authenticate.

If you are signing in to Microsoft Teams (or other Microsoft applications) on your smart phone/tablet and have both the Microsoft Authenticator and Duo Mobile apps installed, the login process will move between these apps, and this error can easily result depending on the sequence used.

Complete one of these workflows to resolve the error:

  1. For Verified Push Users, doing this on your smart phone/tablet, you should make sure you follow the following sequence when doing the Verified Push:
    • When you see the Verified Push 3-digit number, you will need to remember the number, switch to the Duo application and provide the 3-digit number you just saw and click the Verify button. If you get the green screen with the approved message, move to the next step.
    • Switch to Microsoft Authenticator and perform the unlock process if requested. If asked by Microsoft Authenticator about remembering the device, you should do this on personal devices.
    • You should be able to return back to the original application, and you should be authenticated.

  2. For other Duo methods (other than Verified Push), remember to return directly to the Microsoft Authenticator app after you finish the Duo authentication process that you are using so that the authentication process can be completed by Microsoft Authenticator. If it fails, go back to the original application (like Teams / Outlook) and try a different sequence. You should be able to try as many times as you like.

  3. If you do not use Microsoft Authenticator, you can choose to remove this app to resolve the error.
    • WARNING: Ensure that access and credentials are no longer needed before you remove any authenticator app. Duo is not responsible for any loss of credentials or access as a result of taking this step.

If Microsoft Authenticator is not installed on your mobile device when this error occurs, these steps do not apply.
