Duo and International Travel
If you travel internationally, don’t worry – Duo authentication can work without cellular service or a Wi-Fi connection.
Users have several options for secure access:
- Smartphone/Tablet – Even with cellular service disabled, you may use the Duo Mobile app to generate a passcode that you can use for secure access. Simply choose the Enter a Passcode option when you get the Duo authentication prompt. To generate the passcode, open the Duo Mobile app on your phone and tap the “Show” button next to Passcode next to "Emory". If you’re online, you can also use Duo Verified Push, which will prompt you to enter the 3-digit code shown on your login screen.

- Security Key – if you don’t have a smartphone/tablet and you travel internationally often, you may want to get a YubiKey. Refer to Emory Yubikey Guidance for more information on procuring and setting up your YubiKey. Insert or tap your YubiKey when prompted and follow the on-screen instructions to authenticate. Please note that if you choose to purchase a YubiKey, the expense will need to be covered by your department. Be sure to coordinate with your departmental administration to follow the appropriate procedures for procurement.
- ByPass Code – If you won’t have a smartphone/tablet and a hardware token is not an option, it is possible to get a bypass code that you can use for Duo authentication for the duration of your trip. Contact the Service Desk (University: 404-727-7777 / Healthcare: 404-778-4357) to request this option. Then, simply choose the Enter a Passcode option when you get the Duo authentication prompt and enter the bypass code that you were given.
- Normal Options – If your device will have access to WIFI or cellular connectivity while traveling, then you can simply use whatever authentication technique you normally use. The Duo Verified Push option works overseas with WIFI connectivity. The Text Message option will work if you have cellular connectivity while traveling internationally and can receive text messages. You can even register an international mobile phone number as one of your authentication options with Duo if you register it before your trip. Otherwise, you will need to make an international call to set up the number with the Emory Service Desk.
- Phone Call Option - The phone call option is being phased out and may not be available when you travel. So, we recommend that you plan on using other options.
If you have questions about any of these authentication options, please consult the Duo FAQ page or the Duo User Guide.
