Claude for Education
Faculty, staff and students with active emory.edu accounts can request access to the university-managed Claude service.
The initial offering focuses on Claude Chat, with expanded capabilities to be introduced once approved. Other AI tools available to the Emory community are listed on the Emory Approved Secure AI Technology (EASAT) Registry.Using Claude
Request access
Request access to Claude using the AI Tools form.
Please note: We have temporarily reached our current Claude EDU license capacity. You may still submit your request. We expect to resume provisioning next week as additional licenses become available.
Provisioning timeline
During the first month, licenses are provisioned in weekly batches every Friday. To be included in that week's batch, submit requests by the end of Wednesday. The final weekly batch will run on Friday, November 6. Beginning Monday, November 9, license provisioning will take 2 to 3 business days.
After you submit your request for access:
- OIT reviews and approves each request, based on eligibility and availability.
- You'll receive sign-in instructions via email, using your existing Emory credentials.

Request additional resources
Looking for a capability that isn't available yet? Submit a request and describe your use case. New capabilities are evaluated and introduced through targeted pilots before broader release.
Worth exploring: a feature that isn't available yet, additional team seats, API access, or integration with a system you use every day.
- Open a request through the AI Tools form. Describe what you're trying to accomplish rather than the specific feature you want.
- OIT will review your request and determine next steps. Some requests can be approved right away, others require a security or privacy review, and some may not be available yet.
Volume matters. The more requests we receive on a certain topic or feature, the more visibility it gains.
What Emory can and cannot access
By default, no administrator at Emory reads private conversations. Managers, department chairs, professors, and OIT staff do not have access to this information.
There is one exception. Emory can access conversation content for a formal discovery process, such as a search warrant or legal hold, an academic integrity proceeding, or an HR investigation.
There is an administrative audit log. It records what administrators change in the system but does not contain conversation content or conversation titles.
Conversations are kept for 90 days and then deleted automatically.
What to keep out
Use the Emory account for Emory-related work only. It runs under Emory's agreement with Anthropic rather than consumer terms, so conversations are not used to train models and Emory controls how long data is saved. No personal Claude subscription provides those same institutional protections.
Some data should never be entered into any AI tool. The Emory account operates under institutional governance, but that does not make it a secure environment for every type of information. It is a standard configuration with no special safeguards for sensitive data. Always exclude:
- Health information
- Identifiable student records covered by FERPA
- Passwords, credentials, keys and tokens
Anthropic Academy
Free and open to everyone at academy.claude.com. Emory sign-in not required.

Learning mode
The fastest way to understand what Claude is good at is to let it question you rather than generate answers for you. Open a Project, turn on Learning mode, and work through something that you already know well.
Build your AI skills
Emory provides self-guided resources through its Brainier platform:
Need help or have a question?
For issues using Claude, open a support request and include:
- Your NetID and Emory affiliation (faculty, staff or student)
- What you were trying to achieve and what happened instead
- The exact wording of the error message, if one appeared
- Whether you were signed into your Emory or personal account
All requests involving a new AI use case, capability, integration, connectivity, or broader access, should be submitted through the AI Tools Form, ensuring we can appropriately evaluate and route your request.
For general questions or support related to Emory's AI services, please email aisupport@emory.edu.
What OIT can help with
- Access, sign-in and provisioning
- Something that is broken or behaving oddly
- Sensitive data entered by mistake
- API access
What OIT cannot help with
- How to use AI responsibly. Please see responsibleai.emory.edu.
- Whether an answer is correct. You are responsible for verifying.
- FERPA and data privacy questions. Please ask the Compliance Office.
Important: Data and Responsible Use
Claude for Education is not currently approved for use with HIPAA-regulated protected health information (PHI), Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI), or non-public student education records restricted by FERPA. Do not enter or upload this information into Claude.
If your work involves regulated or sensitive data, use an AI tool approved for that purpose. Review the Emory Approved Secure AI Technology (EASAT) Registry for approved options and applicable usage guidance.
All use of Claude must follow applicable Emory policies and guidance and must comply with applicable legal, regulatory, and contractual requirements, including obligations to third parties.
Before using Claude, review the Emory Responsible AI website for guidance on responsible AI use.
Emory Policies that Govern AI Use
This page sits underneath Emory's existing policies (acceptable use, data classification, FERPA, HIPAA) and does not replace them. Where there's any discrepancy, the policy takes precedence.
